How I Learned About the Course
I signed up for TRX newsletter through my NASM cert knowing that they offered discounts. I’d always been interested in TRX training and loved using it, I just really didn’t know how to utilize it the best.
They started offering free virtual training for you to get the first level of your TRX cert which is just called the “TRX Suspension Training Course.”
Getting Prepared For The Course
There are no other requirements for this- i.e. you don’t have to be a certified personal trainer to take the course.
The course promises to “Learn to use the TRX Coaching system to apply foundational movement-based training techniques with the TRX suspension trainer to get any member, at any level, to reach their goals”
I signed up for the course and shot a message over to my boss at the commercial gym I work at to ask if I could come in and take the course there and use the TRX since I didn’t have one at home.
I had to create an account to sign up for the class. I received an email a few days beforehand to get set up and complete the Liability waiver and download my manual. The manual is really more like a workbook for you to fill out as you go.
TRX Suspension Training Live Virtual Certification Course Experience
I had two instructors that, from what I remember, have been with TRX for a long time. The guys Austin is based out of Cali and mentioned he works for an Orange Theory where they use TRX quite a bit? And Crystal lives somewhere on the East coast and, I believe has her own yoga studio. She did say she helped develop the TRX for Yoga course which seems to be a newer offering.
Anyway, they were both GREAT!! It was two days in a row of 3 hours of instruction. The instructions said you actually didn’t have to have a TRX to take the course but man I would definitely recommend you do and go along with them as they demo things!!!
I think this is one of those instances where the instructors make or break the course. Sure they all cover more or less the material, but who wants to spend 6 hours with boring people? We went through the entire manual, including filling out the blanks.
Taking The TRX Suspension Trainer Certification Exam
A few days later I received the email to take the exam. I felt prepared & I thought it would be super easy. You get 3 attests to pass the test.
HOLY MOLY WAS I WRONG THOUGH!!
The 50 question exam was SO HARD!!! And this is totally no fault of the instructors, they went with the manual. However the exam had things that were nowhere to be found in the manual (Literally, I used the find function to search on various occasions). Also the exam had no time limit, but there was no counter to tell you what questions you’d left blank. So I spend quite a bit of time going back and forth between the questions and then reviewing at the end to make sure I had actually selected an answer on each one. Total pain in the butt and something that I feel TRX could easily implement to make the user experience much better.
Anyway, it took me about an hour to complete the exam and I finished with an 87%. I was actually really unsure if I was going to pass or not and I was stressed because I didn’t want to have to take it again, and I was worried they wouldn’t tell me which questions I got right and wrong (thankfully they do that). From there, there were clear instructions to print our my certificate which is awesome!
Overall Takeaways from the TRX Suspension Training Live Virtual Certification Course
So all in all, here’s what it comes down to
I feel like the course prepared me and gave me the tools I need to confidently program TRX exercises for myself and my clients.
It was FREE so I feel like I got a great deal. I wouldn’t have paid for it otherwise because there are several other certs on my list which I feel like would be more beneficial toward my education. HOWEVER, TRX training is a great tool to use for my client base of busy professions. Many who live in apartment buildings (aka no space for a home gym) and/or that travel a lot.
The test was terrible!! Seriously so hard in terms of content, and not well organized.
In the future will I do another TRX certification? Probably not- as I said above I don’t think the skills are essential to my business or my interests.
My instructors were amazing! So engaging and knowledgeable. They definitely made the experience so positive
